AGM 2002

Yorkshire Chess Association AGM
Railway Institute, York, 22 June
2002
(the Secretary's post-AGM report for those who
weren't there)
The relative
lateness of the meeting was caused by other meetings and events occurring
earlier in the month.
President's Report
The President,
Ihor Lewyk, had submitted a written report to be found at President's Report 2002.
Rule Changes
The main
outcome to note from the meeting was the reduction, after 117 years, in the
number of boards per in the Woodhouse Cup from ten to eight (or two
"carfuls"), the same as in the lower divisions. Click here for a
list of proposals and how they fared.
County Team Successes
In 2001-2002
Northern Counties Chess Union events, Yorkshire did slightly worse than last
year winning the top two team competitions, the Open and the U-175, in both
cases with Lancashire in second place.
In the U-150, however, we didn't repeat last season's win, coming second
to Lancashire, which nevertheless secured a place in the English Counties
quarter-finals. Unfortunately, all
three teams lost in their quarter-final matches. We did however once again retain the Counties Quickplay
Championship. The U-125 team came third
out of five in the NCCU event, while the U-100 captain, in the event, was
unable to run the team. Click here for a photos of various trophies.
Junior Chess
The Secretary
for Junior Chess, Alan Coupe, had submitted a written report to be found at Junior Report 2002.
Changes in Officers
Sam Nicholls
steps down a Minutes Secretary, limiting his chess activity now to the British
Individual Rapidplay, and is replaced by Jim Burnett of Doncaster who thereby
adds a new voice to committee meetings.
Peter Tate steps down as Year Book editor, being replaced by Hon. Sec.
Steve Mann who also continues running the web site. Chris Wright steps down as U-175 captain leaving a vacancy
temporarily filled by Ihor Lewyk. Alan
Coupe steps in as U-100 captain. Chas
Wood, who last season suggested we appoint someone (him!) to attempt a
publicity/marketing/sponsorship role, decided to step down and has not been
replaced. Click
here for the full list of officers.
The Bulletin
Stuart Swire of
Bradford continues as bulletin editor.
Considerations such as work made it difficult to find the time he needed
to produce anything in the latter part of last season, but he's happy to have
another go this season. The idea of the
Hon. Sec. ensuring results circulars went out when magazine-style bulletins were
not possible was mooted and met with general agreement. Those with access to the web site do of
course see YCA league results posted regularly, but many do not have such
access.
Hardcastle Shield
This year's
recipient was Peter Tate who was ably filled various arduous posts within the
YCA. He has been Competitions
Controller and Year Book editor, but is most notable for having successfully
computerised and run the YCA grading system.
Outside the YCA he has been involved in the running of both Doncaster
Chess Club and Doncaster Chess Congress.
Well done Pete. Click here for a photos of this and other trophies.
Fees
These are unchanged. Click here for list
of fees.
League
Structure
The
structure of the four divisions of the league was retained with 12/11 teams in
each of the top three divisions playing each other once, and 6 teams in the
A.G.Sunderland Cup playing each other twice.
An extra team was promoted from the Silver Rook to the IM Brown, so that
the division eleven teams is now the Silver Rook. Click here for list of teams in each
division.
