The 2001 YCA Grading List here
on the web started as the version included in the YCA Year Book 2001-02. Last year the grader responded to reported errors
and omissions and some corrections were applied to the list on the web. Such minor changes may well be similarly
applied this year.
Grading Reports
Once again the players'
individual grading reports detailing results included and how the grades were
calculated are included. Click on the underlined
reference code (Yxxxx) in the grading list to display the related grading
report. This was tried for the first
time last season and proved popular. It
also proved trying for the grader, as every Tom, Dick or Harriet with internet
access could scrutinise their grading details and find errors and omissions,
and then of course complain!!
Errors
Omissions are the main
problem. The list can only include
results that are reported to the grader.
Coverage of events is good if not 100% as far as leagues and congresses
within the county are concerned.
Nevertheless, results submitted from some leagues have been known to be
incomplete. It is not the job of the
grader to check the completeness of such sets of results, though such a check
would be expedient if possible. Also,
results are sometimes reported incorrectly.
The grader cannot know the data supplied is incorrect. A rarer problem, but one most galling to the
sufferer and tediously messy for the grader to resolve, is the inadvertent merging
of two players with the same or similar names.
The grader has a problem. Hermione
Hogsprocket of York RI in the Yorkshire league and Hermione Hogsprocket of Lady
Anne Middleton in the York league are "obviously" the same person. (Actually Hermione doesn't exist, but you get
the idea I think.) It is less clear
whether G Fletcher of Sheffield in the Doncaster Congress and G Fletcher of
Earl of Arundel in the Sheffield league are the same person. In fact they sometimes are and they
sometimes aren't!! Gerry plays both
league and congress chess while Garry plays just in congresses. Both live in Sheffield. The grader cannot know about all such
circumstances.
Coverage
Data included comes
primarily from the YCA's own league, the numerous local leagues, and local
congresses. Inter-county representative
matches, club championships etc are included as available.
Relation to BCF List
Whilst the YCA as such is
affiliated to the BCF and so submits results of its competitions for inclusion
in the BCF grading list, the numerous local leagues are not at present
affiliated to the BCF. Thus whilst YCA
league results should be reflected in the BCF grading list, those of the local
leagues are not. For this reason, most
"grass roots" Yorkshire players are not in the BCF list, and where
they are in the BCF list their BCF grade is usually based on fewer games than
their YCA grade and inevitably differs as it is based on a different set of
results. The relatively few players who
play most of their chess in congresses in and out of the county, however, will
probably find their BCF grade more accurate than their YCA grade.
Which Grade?
Where a player has a grade
in more than one list, look at the grade category (A to E). Normally an "A" grade is more
reliable than a "B" grade, a "B" more reliable than a
"C" etc. When the grade
category is the same in both lists then look at the number of games included,
if shown. The greater the number of
games, the more reliable the grade should be.
