The Sheffield & District
Chess Association was established in 1883.
It is an association of clubs in Sheffield, other parts of South
Yorkshire, and also clubs in north Derbyshire and north Nottinghamshire. Membership of clubs is subject to approval
by the Annual General Meeting held in September.
The Association runs team
competitions for contest between member clubs.
There is a team league, currently in four divisions each of nine
teams, with 8 players per team in the first division and six per team in all
others. There is also a 6-player team
knockout, with first round losers being eligible for a "plate"
competition.
The Association runs individual
championships in three strength-based classes as well as a junior
individual championship. These take the
form of a single Swiss event, each round lasting a number of weeks.
The Association also
conducts the G.W.Moses Trophy competition for contest between champions
of clubs from both the Sheffield & District chess Association and the
Sheffield Works Sports Association Chess Section.
In lighter vein, the
Association runs a one-day rapidplay individual tournament for the Crabb
Shield, and a one-evening individual lightning tournament for the Gurnhill
Memorial Trophy.
